diagraming potential theatre views
3-d model and perspectives
Working on the 3-d model (these are in progress). Roofs are quite difficult in sketch up! Looking at the columns that support the roof, they may want to get more slender. The roof really isn't flat at the top, it would slope down, just have to model it better. Looking at the roof, it may want more sculptural qualities to it.

roof as the sculptural element
Above pictured are several examples by Le Corbusier that exemplify using the roof as a sculptural element. Top pictured is the Heidi Weber Muesum (Pavillion) in Zurich and the Bottom is the Notre Dame de haut in Ronchamp. The roof in my project will be a stand alone element. The fascade will then seem to float and be visually unconneted to the roof. Some study sketches to follow shortly.

If it wasn't for bad luck............
OK So I will not be posting my plan and section boards tonight as previously planned. Apparently I didn't save my ACAD files down when working on them this week at work (I run 2008 at the office and 2002 at home). So I have no way of extracting the drawings from the files to format onto the boards. I will have to post on Monday.

First Floor Plan
Looking at the first floor plan. The plan needed to get bigger to accommodate the program. The more I look at the plan, the courtyard isn't working. It seems to make more sense to have a two story atrium space with a skylight or glass above to bring light down into the space. With the nightclub restaurant space at the second floor (maybe more retail too), I have to look at how people circulate through the building at different times of the day. My main concern is that at night, when the retail is closed, people will have to circulate through the space to get up stairs to the second floor where the restaurant and nightclub are.

Materiality
Materials for the Urban Theatre. The above example is the "Swedish Lantern" by Gert Wingardh featured in the magazine "Architect" this month. Other than the blond wood detailing, this building has several features that I had in mind for my own. First, the second floor hovers over the first. The first floor is also all glass, so it looks like the first floor is very transparent. The other detail that I was looking at was the glass square panels at the second floor. I was looking into doing the same but with frosted glass. These panels could be a second skin around the entire first floor, or be used as a replacement detail for the massive screens I organized the site with. It seems to be a natural progression to de-materialize the screen into a detail like this, instead of having massive jumbo-trons on the site. Other materials I have been looking at are metal panels (http://www.alpolic-usa.com/)or pre-cast concrete. These panels would mainly be used at the second floor level. The metal panels along with the glass second skin might create a good dialog between my building and the prudential tower. The way my building is shaping up, it will stand out on the site as an sculptural object. I do not, however, want it to be whimsy (sorry Mike) much like Frank Ghery's band shell at Millennium Park.

Where are the Comments?
All,
I posted the jury's response to the presentation in the comments section to the first post. Located there is my course of action as well. Enno, if these pictures of the presentation won't do, let me know. I can scan in the drawings, but all the information seems to come across with the photographs.
I had one hell of a week with everyone. Although I have never been so physically exhausted from academic work before in my life, I look forward to August to do it all over again. I enjoyed meeting everyone and look forward to the continued conversations we will all have.
Blog Well----Blog Often.
Peace
