Urban Theater: Comments from Jury.

1) Things doing double duty, ie stairs and seating area are very important.
2) Seen and be seen is very strong. Who is the actor and who is the audience? People in the space act as both at the same time (double duty as mentioned above).
3) What does it mean to be on display at all times? The language of this interaction.
4) The best way to describe what is happening on the site is a series of perspectives. A story board of people watching people, or watching the theatrical interactions. Each sketch could work back towards the actor/audience. Viewer point of view.
5) How do you bring someone into the site?
6) View of people from the Prudential Tower onto the sight.
7) Transparent facade.
8) Relationship to street from retail-connect to it.
9) 3 sides of view does not have this people watching people theme.
10) Play with the overlapping grids. There are two grids in place. One had been superimposed onto the existing grid.
11) Subdivide interior space-need spatial refinement.
12) The courtyard is puny.
13) Continue the theme of the site into the interior spaces of the building, not just the perimeter.
14) Collaborate spatial volumes.
15) Why does this site fit in here, not just any open plaza?
16) What clues do you give for people to enter the site?
17) Omni-opticon.

Urban Theater: What I am going to do about it.

The presentation on Saturday set a good baseline for the remainder of the semester. It was very evident that the best way to describe this project is going to be a storyboard of perspectival images. Getting this into 3-D will be critical.
The building itself needs to be further developed per the theme of the site. This will be the first order of business. Next I will massage the site to really embellish the themes that are in place. Not only will the plan organization be important, but materiality as well.
The main theme being:Urban Theater/Urban Theatrics. Sub-themes that are inherent to the first; see and be seen, double duty, the relationship of actor and audience.
I will also be reexamining the grids on the site. I will not get rid of the grid I created, I think it is very strong on the site. But I will reintroduce the existing grid that I ignored for the last week. This overlapping grid should prove to be very strong.

Nick,

I think you have a great idea going with the urban theater. I would spend some time studying how your space changes during the day/nightime, as well as during the summer/winter months. You might find it challenging to keep vibrant activity going during some of these times. Although if you can achieve it, it will be a one-of-a-kind place and experience. This reminds me a little of Millenium Park, which I think you mentioned during our time in Boston. Creating a theatrical place for people to gather is an important quality for a city to have. For an example, I would look at the characteristics that made Gehry's project successful. I have been to Millenium Park in the summertime and it was a great experience. I'm not sure how successful it is in the winter months, have you been there? I wonder if it is as active of a place???

Great Concept!
